Will 2016 be the year for Snapchat or Twitter? Both social media platforms have big things on the horizon this coming year.

Twitter, with their stock price on the decline, may increase their character limit from 140 to 10,000. The appearance of a tweet will remain the same; however, twitter users will be able to view the additional characters with a click. Many people have been turned off from tweeting due to the 140 character limit; others enjoy the brevity. Will more characters take away from the concept of the tweet, or, as Twitter hopes, help attract new users and increase user engagement?

Said Twitter President Jack Dorsey, “We are not going to be shy about building more utility and power into Twitter for people. As long as it’s consistent with what people want to do, we’re going to explore it.”

After a strong year in 2015, Snapchat has even more enhancements planned, this time with advertisers in mind. Included in those enhancements: the platform will offer more targeting options, “letting advertisers target ads at specific age groups and by device, location, and context”, and new ad formats “including sponsored lenses that let users overlay graphics and animations over their selfies and its native-video ad product called 3V (Vertical, Video, Views).” Snapchat is also rumored to go public this year, which could lead to a drastic increase in revenue.
